Explant is the surgical removal of breast implants. Some women have it planned for months and some decide quickly; either way it is a different recovery from the surgery that put the implants in, and the thing most people are unprepared for is how much the shape changes.
Breast implant removal, with or without capsulectomy
Breast implant removal, or explantation, may be chosen for a number of reasons, including personal preference, complications, implant concerns or symptoms that some women associate with breast implant illness (BII).
Explantation does not necessarily involve removal of the surrounding capsule. Capsulectomy is a separate procedure in which some or all of the capsule of scar tissue surrounding the implant is removed, and it may be performed alongside explantation when clinically appropriate.
